French aristocrat Alexis Charles-Henri de Tocqueville, who visited America in the nineteenth century, was a keen observer of American society. These observations led to the publication of Democracy in America, a comprehensive look at American social trends and politics. One of the most significant observations of Tocqueville's book concerned the strong tendency for Americans to help each other in times of need. Democracy in America applauds and immortalizes the American spirit of voluntary association and voluntary effort for the common good.
...I have often admired the extreme skill with which the inhabitants of the United States succeed in proposing a common object for the exertions of a great many men and in inducing them voluntarily to pursue it.
