A Word From Our President & CEO Gary Godsey
![]() |
"United Way's mission is improving lives in our communities and we know through the work of United Way's local partner agencies, these hurricane victims' lives and their situations will be improved while they are here with us in North Texas.” |
|
With 25 years of personal experience, Mr. Godsey indicates the top five tips to know before giving to a charity:
Give to charities you know and trust. Experience is the best teacher.
Never give your social security or credit card number to someone soliciting you over the telephone.
Ask for a copy of the charity's 990. This contains all financial information. Charities are required by law to give you a copy upon request. If they refuse, don't do business with them.
Ask tough questions. If they can't answer or won't answer to your satisfaction, move on.
Beware of organizations or individuals soliciting on behalf of a single person. Giving to a recognized charity for the benefit of all is the best course of action.
United Way encourages all North Texans to support partner agencies during this time of crisis. In response to Hurricane Katrina, this section of our site will be updated with the latest needs, services and volunteer opportunities available at our partner agencies.
