In 1974, Roger Staubach did a television commercial for the United Way. One of the millions who saw it was a young Troy Aikman.
Now, 38 years later, the two legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks are teaming up to chair a new effort by the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas to entice big-dollar donors.
The Tocqueville Society is an existing group of United Way donors who give $10,000 or more annually. Aikman and Staubach took center stage at a luncheon Tuesday to launch an elite group within that elite group, the $25,000 Circle of the Ruth Sharp Altshuler Tocqueville Society. About 150 people attended the luncheon at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek.
Aikman was the first to kick in $25,000 and join the new circle.
“Troy is starting out with United Way in a very big way,” said Ruth Altshuler, the Dallas philanthropist who founded the Tocqueville Society. “Then again, everything Troy does, he does big.”
Aikman said, “I work with and give money to United Way because I am confident my money is going to a good cause.”
Staubach has been giving for decades.
“To us, Roger Staubach is like Queen Elizabeth is in England — he’s that big a deal here at United Way,” Altshuler said. “I’ve never known someone with his celebrity who uses that celebrity so generously and wisely.”
Aikman said one of his goals is to reach out to younger well-to-do donors. “So many young people are out there who are capable of giving, but they aren’t aware of United Way and the Tocqueville Society,” he said. “I hope to get the word out to people who are in a position to give.
“There is strength in numbers and there is strength in names — this group is full of powerful, philanthropic people who have the power to make a difference.”

Two Super Bowl-winning Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks called on North Texas philanthropists to dig deeper for the causes supported by the United Way, in a luncheon Tuesday in Dallas.
Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman announced the creation of a $25,000 Circle for the Ruth Sharp Altshuler Tocqueville Society, and each quarterback contributed that amount to kick off the campaign.
Tocqueville Society's membership is made up of those who give $10,000 or more annually to the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. The organization is adding the $25,000-and-up level in hopes of raising more money.
Staubach and Aikman also traded gridiron stories and even talked politics at the event at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek.
Asked by moderator Scott Murray what single player from any era he'd draft if given the opportunity, Staubach graciously said it would be Aikman.
Aikman, however, said he'd choose former San Francisco 49ers great Joe Montana as his starter. "But if he got hurt," Aikman said, "Roger would be in."
In the last five years, Tocqueville Society members have made contributions totaling more than $37 million to help United Way.
