Born Learning

United Way is excited to announce its newest special initiative, Born Learning, an early learning childhood development project for children ages 0-3.

Key research shows that children begin learning at birth. By age three, more than 50% of a child's brain is developed, largely influenced by day-to-day experiences. Unfortunately, many children are not getting enough quality early learning experiences.

Kindergarten teachers estimate that approximately 46% of students come to school at risk for failure. The average low-income kindergartener has a vocabulary of 600, compared to the average high-income kindergartener's vocabulary of 1,500.

A 40-year longitudinal study that followed infants into adulthood shows that investing $1 in early learning saves $17 down the road, with tangible results measured in lower crime, fewer teen pregnancies and high individual education and earning levels.

  • $10 will buy one book to help support a child's language and literacy skills.

  • $10 per day allows an economically disadvantaged preschooler to participate in a high-quality early learning program.

  • $10 funds educational materials so parents can do at-home work with their kids.

  • $200 allows eight families to participate in an eight-week parent education class for children ages 0-6 years old.

United Way's Born Learning program will provide a targeted focus on one neighborhood at a time to involve parents and professionals from a wide variety of community institutions (child care centers, faith communities, health care, schools) to better understand and support the early learning development of children between the ages of 0-3.
