Spotlight on Steve Schortgen
Steve Schortgen has been a committed and active United Way supporter for many years. As a partner at Baker Botts, he has been the foundation for their successful campaign efforts, culminating in repeated record-breaking campaign totals year after year. Today, Baker Botts is the second largest law firm campaign for the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. In 2007, Steve also secured funding through Baker Botts for the United Way Leadership Giving Chairs Briefing.
In addition to the great work Steve has done to elevate the visibility of United Way internally at his law firm, he has shown the same commitment to do this externally in the community. After many years of membership with United Way's Young Leaders Society (YLS), Steve accepted the role of chair of this organization in 2007. Working with a fantastic steering committee, Steve increased the profile of YLS events. In 2007, more YLS members attended more YLS events than in any prior year.
One of the main ideas that Steve tried to communicate to YLS membership during his tenure as chair is the impact and importance of the Community Investment Fund. As a panel volunteer, Steve has dedicated a significant amount of time to be a part of this process, ultimately making decisions that affected the funding of many local agencies. He speaks passionately about this process, encouraging others to get involved.
