Spotlight on Steve Massey
Steve Massey, Director of Community Services for the City of Allen, has been a long-time supporter of United Way. With his eight years of giving through the City of Allen campaign, and 34 years in the Armed Forces Combined Federal Campaign, Steve is a Loyal Contributor, which means he has supported United Way for more than 25 years.
Not only does Steve give to the community through his financial contributions, but he also helped lead the campaign for the City of Allen for the past eight years. Steve has structured the City's United Way campaign to "build our team" through events that both directly serve the citizens of Allen and also create energy and fun within the staff. They increase the campaign's effectiveness by recruiting campaign coordinators from each of the City's departments to assure that every employee receives direct contact from someone they are familiar with. They have also "spliced" into the campaign a food drive for a local food bank. The donations to the food bank come right at the holiday season when there is the greatest need. The majority of the City's United Way donations come from employees that opt to donate through payroll deductions. On top of their pledging, they create campaign enjoyment by implementing many special events and "crazy" activities that help keep everyone focused on the campaign for the two-week period.
Steve implemented a "Day of Caring" volunteer event for the City's campaign in 2002, and has kept this element of the campaign going strong each year due to the great feedback they get in both helping others and team building. When asked why Steve has taken on the role of leading the campaign, he responded, "I believe organizations like the City of Allen should offer their employees an opportunity to offer financial support to the organizations that the United Way has verified as addressing urgent needs of society in a cost efficient and effective manner."
