Spotlight on Carl Scherz
Carl C. Scherz, a trial attorney and partner at Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell LLP, has been a United Way volunteer for the past six years. Locke Lord has always had a very active United Way campaign and encourages everyone to participate. As a result of the campaign, Carl and his wife decided to dedicate their charitable donations to United Way, but he wanted to see how their donations were being used by United Way. Through an introduction from one of his partners, he started volunteering on a Priority Needs Grant Panel in 2003, and served for three years as a panel member and one year as panel vice-chair. That same year, he also started volunteering with the Stewardship Committee, and has been serving as the vice-chair since 2006. Carl will be the new 2008 Stewardship chair.
Through the Priority Needs Grant and Stewardship processes, Carl has been exposed to over 70 charitable organizations that partner with United Way. That exposure has shown him the great deal of need in the Metroplex and introduced him to many of the people who are working to meet that need. Carl's involvement has also allowed him to see how his charitable donations to United Way are being used to help the community.
Many of the more meaningful experiences have come during the Priority Needs Grant process during the site visits. Agencies discuss the need for the grant funding and illustrate how the funding will actually impact and help the community. The more memorable presentations have included testimonials from clients who have been helped by these programs. These testimonials tear at your heart and often leave many in the room in tears. They always remind Carl to keep life in the proper perspective, to remember how fortunate he has been, and to never forget the importance of giving to charity.
