Spotlight on Cynthia Hunter Spann

For 12 years, Cynthia Spann has been an integral member of the volunteer team at United Way Metropolitan Dallas. Serving in multiple key positions on the Board of Directors, and Executive and Central Allocations Committees, Spann has worked hard to ensure that the organization is successful in its operations, fundraising efforts, and community investment strategies through her commitment to the following roles:

Central Allocations Committee - Current Chair and Past Officer
Board of Directors - Current Member
Executive Committee - Current Member
Grant Panel Past Chair, Vice Chair and Volunteer

Currently a social worker and program director for Integrated Minority AIDS Network, Inc. (IMANI), (http://www.imanihiv.org/Home.asp) Spann states she learned to value United Way early in her career. "My very first job as a professional social worker was at a United Way-funded child-placement agency in Philadelphia, PA. My first medical social work position was at a United Way-funded home health and hospice agency in Dallas. In both cases, I saw first-hand the critical need for financial support from United Way in order for these agencies to deliver high-quality services to the communities they served."

Becoming a United Way volunteer was an avenue by which Spann felt she could show gratitude to the organization, as well as fulfill personal aspirations. "As a Christian, I believe I have an obligation to share my time, talents, and other resources in order to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Volunteering with United Way is one way I can effectively accomplish that mission. It's been very meaningful to hear success stories of those whose lives have been improved by United Way dollars that I helped raise and allocate."

In addition to being an active member of St. Luke "Community" United Methodist Church, Spann is a member of the following organizations:

American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE)
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
National Association of Health Service Executives (NAHSE)
National Association of Social Workers (NASW)

Spann has a Master of Social Work, and recently earned a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration. She has been married to Thomas Spann for 27 years. They have two children, Monique Spann Redmon and Thomas Spann, Jr., and three grandchildren.
