Spotlight on Jim Gallegos

Jim Gallegos, purchasing manager for 7-Eleven, Inc., has spent the past 25+ years helping carry on a family tradition started by his father - serving family and friends through volunteerism.

In 1975, while working for IBM in Boulder, Colorado, Jim volunteered for several years as an IBM "Canvasser," helping to distribute and collect United Way employee pledge cards during their annual workplace campaign. This role provided Jim with many opportunities to learn about the health and human service support United Way provides, and kick-started what has become a long-term, multi-city relationship with the organization.

Jim has played an integral role with United Way in several capacities, including:

  • Foothills United Way - IBM Canvasser, 1975-1978
  • United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona - UW Volunteer, 1982-1985
  • Greater Lewisville United Way - Board Member, 1990-1995
  • Greater Lewisville United Way - Campaign Chair, 1991
  • Greater Lewisville United Way - Board Chairman, 1993
  • Greater Lewisville United Way - Board Member, 2003-2006
  • Greater Lewisville United Way - New Board Development, 2005
  • Greater Lewisville United Way - Board Chairman, 2006
  • United Way of Metropolitan Dallas - Board Member, 2006-2007

"Aren't you the guy in the United Way video?"

While serving as an IBM volunteer in Tucson, Arizona, Jim appeared in an IBM campaign video, featuring information about the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. After the video was distributed to employees nationwide, Jim states he was unable to begin a meeting without someone asking, "Aren't you the guy in the United Way video?" "That was the start and end of my "film" career," Jim jokes.

Jim is also committed to a number of other organizations in our area, including:

  • St. Ann Catholic Church of Coppell - member
  • Capital Improvements Advisory Committee, City of Lewisville - Chair
  • Planning and Zoning Board, City of Lewisville - Commissioner

Looking ahead, Jim says he will continue to participate with United Way in some way, stating, "It has always been very satisfying to be part of efforts that positively change the lives of people, so I will definitely continue to be involved."
