Spotlight on Carl Scherz

Carl C. Scherz, Trial attorney/Partner for Locke Liddell & Sapp LLP has served in various capacities during the past four years of his involvement with United Way.

"Locke Liddell has always had a very active United Way campaign and encourages everyone to participate," said Carl. "As a result of the campaign, my wife and I decided to dedicate our charitable donations to United Way. I wanted to see how our donations were being used, so I started volunteering in various panels."

Specifically Carl has contributed with the following process:

  • Priority Needs/Allocation Panel Member: 2003, 2004, 2005
  • Priority Needs/Allocation Panel Vice-Chair: 2006
  • Stewardship Panel Member: 2003, 2004, 2005
  • Stewardship Vice-Chair: 2006

Through Carl's involvement in these processes, he recalls being exposed to more than 70 United Way community partners.

"I have enjoyed it immensely," said Carl. "That exposure has shown me the great deal of need in the Metroplex and introduced me to many of the people who are working to meet that need. My involvement has also allowed me to see how my charitable donations to United Way are being used to help our community."

Some of Carl's most memorable presentations have included testimonials from families with mentally or physically handicapped children who needed help getting proper care for their children; victims of Katrina who had lost everything and were trying to start a new life; working poor families who needed help for their children, but could not get it through government agencies; and senior citizens without families who could not care for themselves.

"These testimonials tear at your heart and often leave many in the room in tears," said Carl. "They always remind me to keep life in the proper perspective, to remember how fortunate I have been, and to never forget the importance of giving to charity."

Besides Carl's extensive involvement at United Way, he is an active member of St. Rita's Catholic Church and the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program.
