Pacesetters

Determined hearts plus committed energy equals outstanding success. That was the unspoken equation fueling United Way’s 2008 Pacesetter organizations, which were honored Nov. 12 at the annual Pacesetter awards luncheon, sponsored by AT&T/CWA 6215, at the House of Blues.

This year, 100 area organizations assumed the role of Pacesetter — organizations that run early United Way campaigns, setting the pace for other campaigns. Their unyielding support is projected to raise more than $15 million, bringing United Way one step closer to reaching its 2008 campaign goal of $58.3 million.

Five Pacesetter campaigns raised more than $1 million each: AT&T/CWA 6215; Bank of America; the Energy Future Holdings Corp. family of companies including Luminant, Oncor and TXU Energy; JCPenney; and UPS West Region/North Texas District. "Everybody rededicated themselves to the goal and stepped up to the challenge despite these really difficult economic times," said Sandra Davis, who led the workplace campaign for AT&T/CWA 6215, which earned four awards total.

At McLane Foodservice Inc., which earned one of the "Best Practices" Pacesetter Awards, employees found inspiration in United Way's "LIVE UNITED" message. "We embraced the LIVE UNITED theme," said Rebecca Mullin, human resources specialist for McLane Foodservice. "It was a great, new way to introduce United Way to folks."

The Wall Street Journal reports that companies that embrace philanthropy can increase their value, citing recent studies conducted by Dover Management, New York University and the University of Texas at Dallas.

Dover found that companies with a solid link between giving and operating earnings outperformed the Standard & Poor's 500 index by 3.5 percentage points over five years.
