A Word from Our President and CEO, Gary Godsey

In this deep recession, you may have found yourself among many in our community facing the loss of a job, financial difficulties, home ownership or credit challenges, and need for health and human services. This site is intended to help you address "Now what?" with resources, contacts and links to other sites to access much more detailed information.

The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas mission is to improve lives in North Texas. This includes helping people get through hard times. Unemployment, even temporary, is probably one of the most difficult experiences to endure. Losing your job is traumatic, especially when it affects your entire family's income. Knowing where to turn and taking control of your situation can reduce the impact on you and your family.

We continue to focus on the building blocks of a good life by working to improve education, income and health. This site offers suggestions to maintain your quality of life while searching for employment or handling other financial difficulties. For example, contacts are provided to help find low-cost health insurance, prevent a foreclosure, seek credit counseling and health and human services for which you may qualify.

Tips During Unemployment

Don't ignore your mail

Ignoring government agency inquiries or creditor requests for information may make things worse. If you don’t understand notices or bills sent to you, call the person who sent the bill.

Apply quickly for benefits

Many times individuals wait to apply for benefits such as unemployment and children’s health insurance because they are hopeful they will find employment soon. However, your savings can be depleted quickly before the benefits have time to start. Please apply early.
